I think you can probably tell which of these 3 admirable bikes is the preferred, indeed the ONLY one that Cherub would ride.
Yes. Despite the almost totally trashed steering wheel and the fact that he was getting too long in the leg for it, The Buzz Lightyear Car was the transport of choice for backyard brrrrming.
Occasionally he would stand on the tail-board of the blue trike and scoot himself along. Pedalling, however, was something that Cherub just couldn't seem to master. Fixit opines that there is a basic design flaw in tricycles, because the pedals are a long way away from the body and attached to the steering apparatus. Which is probably true but plenty of other kidlets manage.
However, when Fixit put some trainer wheels on Climber's little old bike, pedalling was suddenly the Cherub's friend.
Now he is off, off and away. He rides all the time. He pedals as though he'd been doing it for years. He corners neatly and steers competently. And he loves, loves, loves his new lallow bike.
The retired life

I'm trying to decide which I like better: your charming post or its label.
ReplyDeleteAaaawh! "Lallow"! I am starting to feel all grandma-ish which , at 42, is bloody terrifying!
ReplyDeleteLove the eclectic style choice - the spiderman/buzz lightyear combination.
ReplyDeleteIn fact I think Spiderman goes with anything. In his pre-school days I would encourage Padawan Learner to wear his luminous Spiderman suit(with built in muscles) to pick up KBlossom at school. That way I could find him in the playground. On more than one occasion I had 2-3 teachers looking for him...
You do know where this is heading, don't you?
ReplyDeleteMmmmm. But I think it's genetic anyway.
ReplyDeleteWow, great! I agree with the flawed tricycle thing. Holly loves her pink trike but when she turns a sharp corner one leg is never quite long enough to make it all the way! We're hoping that Santa is going to bring her the bike with training wheels, I'll show her this photo for inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI love the lallow bike!
ReplyDeleteI had a Lallow Twactor when I was little!! Gotta love anything Lallow!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute! That pic of mini spiderman is adorable.
ReplyDeleteGo the lallow bike!
Aren't boys BORN knowing how to say BRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMM! I agree about the pedal/steering combo too. (you don't have to tell fixit that we agree with him). Surely some genius (probably a mother) will figure out a solution soon. Look how long it took them to create the adjustable wasit pants for boys whose legs are miles long and waists are incredibly thin!
ReplyDeleteI know what he's thinking. He wants to yell out "FREEDOM!" in a Braveheart-ish way.
ReplyDelete-J.
How awesome. He looks good on it too :)
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, Lallow! Our grandson says lallow, & seems to love the colour. We bought him a nice bike with trainer wheels & it is lallow, & lives at our house.
ReplyDeleteCherub looks sooo cool as Spiderman.
Love this story, and also your reading and show-and-tell post. As a weary old English teacher, I'm all in favour of reading. Would you like to come and read with some of our reluctant-reader 19-year-olds?
ReplyDeleteOh yes, we have lots of 'lallow' things in our house too!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Fixit's theory on the trike design flaw...some kids manage to work it out...but then again, they're probably the kids with freakishly long arms and legs.
Lovely post!
Did you know Cherub can pedal our trike? I agree they are not as easy as pedalling a bike though. He was so excited to show me his lallow bike I had to check it out over the fence. How cool that you can all go riding together now.
ReplyDeleteWe have an array of bikes and bikes with training wheels at our house. J and the boys love riding , and Margot has hers set up on bricks so she can practise pedalling. It's a shame that bike riding freaks me out - can't handle the gears, scared of hurting myself , just generally freaked! there sounds like there should be a song called the Lallow Bike...
ReplyDeleteThat spiderman outfit is on high rotation at your place, isn't it!
ReplyDeleteGo Lallow, go!
Yes indeed. I barely bother to wash it.
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, you have a little 'pidah man too. Maybe I'll try a small bike with training wheels for my little guy, because he's just not getting the trike concept either.
ReplyDeleteooh, exciting!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait until MF can ride a bike - rught now he's all about his scooter and riding on the back of daddy's bike - and we recently bought him a 'pedal-less' wooden bike that help wee ones learn to balance.
My next goal is to get a baby trailer for Baby Boo so we can all go biking together.
oh how cute !!
ReplyDeleteMC is asking for a bike all of a sudden ( why ? - none of his friends have them - this kid bamboozles us ;)
He used a scooter for the first time the other day, and got the hang of it *snap*, while all his little buddies threw themselves to the ground in frustration.
I'm thinking Xmas this year ( oOoOoh, exciting !! :)
