News from the front

In the school holiday battle for household supremacy, let it be hereby recorded that the children have categorically and undeniably won. Battlefield clean-up is scheduled for the day school begins and will be undertaken by the defeated army, ie, me. Offerings are being made to the weather-gods so they do not smite me with a heat wave until normality is resumed. Meanwhile, a warning to all who try to enter the battle-zone: please tread carefully lest a piece of lego become embedded in your foot or you go arse over elbow when treading on a small train. Clean clothes can be found in one of the baskets of washing lying scattered round the house. Consider yourselves lucky that there is food in the cupboards and meals on the table. Oh, and that I managed a cake for the Climber's low-rent birthday gathering in the park tomorrow morning. (Calling it a 'party' would be too ambitious .)

  2. Well, I think that is a lovely cake. Your Smarties come in much nicer colors than our M&Ms.

  4. It has a certain Electric Company-Boogaloo sense about it, doesn't it?

I'll bet it tastes really good!

  5. Well, the cake rocks...and as of the rest, we need pictorial evidence :)

  6. Oh that cake looks yummy!

They are actually my favourite kind anyway. I'm not into metre high sponges with those toe nails around the sides (shaved almonds).

And who can walk past a Smartie anyway?

    Not me!

  7. Exactly what I'll be doing Wednesday. Park parties are the best: the kids entertain themselves and there's NO cleaning up.
Just for the record: Legoless for 2 weeks so far and NOT missing it at all. Go on, do it !! I'm going to do what Suse suggested and let them have it one month on, one month off.

  8. That cake is perfect - whichever way you slice it everyone will get smarties on their bit and that is all they'll be interested in. Have fun

  9. I'm fairly itching to snitch a bit of candy off that cake! Speaking of legos.... I have just found 17 in various locales in our home. Bathroom, bedroom, closet, chairs... I swear they reproduce in the dark.

How's it going on the cleaner front ?
Perhaps s/he could start ASAP ?!

That Meccano the boy got for Xmas ? It's packed away in the top cupboard. I cracked it after a week.

  13. I think Lego multiplies as fast as wire coathangers in the back of the closet. It's everywhere in our house.

Hope the birthday gathering went well. The cake looks delicious!

  15. Kids love cakes like that! It looks perfectly acceptable to me.

I can almost hear the sighs of relief as the children head back to school.

  16. My house to! And, oh, the piles of washing waiting to be put away... there is one whole sofa out of action thanks to that growing pile. Good luck with your clean-up offensive. I think I'll be having one of those this week as well.

  17. It's a cake, it's got a '7' on it, with a rainbow colour scheme.... want more could a kid want?!

Don't knock the smartie-decorated cake... we've used that tried-and-true cake before in our household!

Hope the birthday gathering was a happy one :)

  18. Stomper,
There was cake, presents, lolly bags, fairy bread, running with friends, the kids had a blast so in what way wasn't it a party??? Don't be hard on yourself. It was a lovely morning.

  19. I love that cake - particularly the bright and colourful seven on the front.

Wait - he's seven already? Too much blinking going on, I think. What are we feeding these kids, growth-booster?!

And is there anything WORSE than stepping on a tiny piece of Lego or a car? Oh the pain...

  20. Lego is one of the reasons I'm glad I have girls. Although Barbie 'bits' are possibly just as bad.

I've looked at it many times, squinted even...still can't see what is wrong with that cake.

  21. Hey, I'm impressed by the cake. It's the neatness of the Smarties - I'd never manage that! By the way, have you seen this week's Big Issue magazine? There's a great article by a Melb writer about the joy of taking adult tap classes. She even talks about a couple learning tap for their wedding. If you can't get your hands on a copy I will send you mine.
