Yes, in an action-packed post I can divulge the breathtaking news that Climber lost his sixth baby tooth yesterday ( Fixit tells me he came out of the bedroom in tears last night because although he was glad to give the tooth fairy her due and get the reward, he was feeling really sad to part with such a fine-looking tooth.) Coinci-dentally [see what I did there, yep one lame pun and I think I'm a legend] the boys had their check-up at the dentist on the same day, at which we were informed that Climber has grown all four of his six-year-old molars (that's the first time I'd heard of such things, live and learn) and my lovely dentist recommended fissure sealing for them at $42 a pop. It's the buzzword in childhood dentistry, a bit like anti-decay insurance. All the kids are doing it, and who am I not to protect my beloveds against the trauma of fillings?
Six months ago when we took the boys to their first ever appointment, Cherub needed me up with him in the dentist's chair. Yesterday he remembered this and put it down to his being 3 at the time. Now that he's 4, he told me, he was going to sit in it by himself, he didn't need to sit on my knee. Clearly being 4 makes all the difference. However, he tells me next time he doesn't want to wear the glasses. I don't know why. He looked quite cool in them.

Fascinating! I'd never heard of fissure sealing before! What will they think of next - filling one's entire mouth full of concrete so decay-inducing foods can't get in?
ReplyDeleteFIssure sealing! Sounds like somehting you might do to a house to protect it from an earthquake!
ReplyDeleteBad mother that I am I am very poor at taking the kids to the dentist. Mainly because it makes me poor.
ReplyDeleteMargot lost tooth number two on Wednesday. Thank god she didn't swallow this one!
Fissure Sealing?
ReplyDeleteFissure Sealing??!!
fissure sealing?! Oh my goodness. Gulp.
ReplyDeleteWe have our first checkup next month, it's going to be interesting to see whether Grace will go anywhere near the chair....
If fissure sealing is what we call "sealants" up here, then it is an absolute GODSEND and worth every penny. I had it done on all my molars when I was 12 or so and never got another cavity until I was in my 30s (at which point they had worn off). My kids had it done a year or so ago and no cavities so far. DO IT!
ReplyDeleteThere's been tooth action in the EasternMax household today as well. Blossom has lost two teeth in the last 24 hrs, at school, in dramatic circumstances. One fell out unexpectedly and skidded across the classroom floor; one had to be twisted out. Bleh.
ReplyDeleteCherub is seriously working the rock star angle in those shades. Coincidentally, losing a fine looking tooth is nothing to sneeze at! Who knows what the replacement will look like? Or if it will come in straight or crooked? See? Now I'm worried about Climber's future teeth. Maybe I need to get that fissure thing for mine.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of it either, which is truly surprising as I think my Dentist has been on an upselling / maximise your consultation course.
ReplyDeleteHe is always trying to flog us some extra service.
Invisalign is his latest thing (those see through braces). Apparently with our private health insurance they would only cost $5000!! I told him after we've paid off the mortage, bought a new car, renovated the house and sent the boys to a private school, we'd talk.
Who knew that teeth could be sooo expensive??!!
ReplyDeleteThey used to be something that came...& went... & came again! Only to go again, in the end...
Fissure sealing sounds like fine advice for fine teeth!
Yes, I had fissure sealing too.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree Cherub looks cool.
Was actually at the dentist today with my 7 year old as she was having her fissure seals. I tell you the sound of the suction raised my heart rate to dangerous levels!!! I am going to the dentist tomorrow - my second fear!! I hate it!!
ReplyDeleteDoes VIC have a government dental program for school kids? We pay $45a year for all visits and treatment oh that excludes orthodontic etc - but it replaces the school dentists of years ago.
