We turned off our lights for Earth Hour last night. Fixit and I sat together in the romantic semi-darkness, holding our separate crosswords as close to our flames as possible. It was all right. We had to set a tea-light candle outside the kids' door while they fell asleep but they didn't seem to mind. I don't know if we saved a lot of energy because our light bulbs are all the good greenie low energy ones, but speaking as one who (a) is not happy in dimly lit environs, (b) lives in a house where light switches are in stupid places due to cheapskate landlords so it's easier to leave them on rather than hunt for the switch in the dark every time you walk through the kitchen and (c) always worries about the fire risks of candle-burning, I would say that the evening taught me that I could operate with fewer lights left on. And maybe I will try that from now on.

We did the candle thing. Gom kept checking out the windows to see how dark our part of the world was- not very!
ReplyDeleteI feel a TAD guilty. I was transferring files to my new hard drive (a several hour process), had a roast in the oven and we were part way through watching a movie. We failed the test miserably.
ReplyDeleteOoh, but it -looks- romantic!
ReplyDeleteGood on you, I didn't even know about it, how did I miss that?
We fail too. Pip and his friend were halfway through the movie "Top Secret". It was too funny to stop.
ReplyDeleteSorry Earth...
Yes we ended up with a modified earth hour - lamps on - overhead lights off and as with you I realised just how many lights I have on unnecessarily.
ReplyDeleteThat has to be a good thing doesn't it?
Eh, here you go making me think again! The last post made me wonder about when we humans first started calling each other "poopy head" and the like, and now we're on to energy conservation.
ReplyDeleteDidn't do it here...Norway, for some reason, considers itself exempt from Earth Hour, so I didn't hear about it until this morning. But I'm good about turning the lights out anyway, although I'm pretty sure I was working on my energy-guzzling laptop at the time. Oops. Next time.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday! Heidi
I took pictures too - but mine look crap. I love tealights, so had them everywhere.
ReplyDeleteHowever, AB watched the footy...
I turned the lights out - but played World of Warcraft in the dark. I don't think anyone in the commission flats outside my window turned off theirs. Also I ashed all over the desk 'cause I couldn't see my ashtray. Then I forgot to turn the light on again until about twenty minutes afterwards.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised you had any candles to light, what with your aversion to them as gifts!
xx Nell
Are the lightbulbs you're using those swirly ones?
ReplyDelete-J.
Good for you. It was a bit romantic, though?
ReplyDeleteDear Lord. I saw that picture of Bertie Wooster and thought he'd caught his tail on fire! That would have been a disastrous end to your earth day.
ReplyDeleteWe ate dinner by candlelight at Bather's @ Balmoral and watched all the north shore families NOT turn out their lights.
ReplyDeleteMy kids lit candles with the babysitter and ventured outside with the hope of seeing more stars. It was, however, too overcast.
We did Earth Hour here in Toronto too - we had dinner by candlelight! (not that romantic either)
